Want
to comply the footsteps of Chrome OS, Google recently introduced the ability to
directly open the Microsoft Office documents to its latest browser beta with an
extension.
A
new Chrome by Google is aimed to overcome with some problems that made by
Google sheets such as unsophisticated Excel Spreadsheet, overwriting words,
ugly looking, and dropping a graphic altogether. The new innovation by Google
is a portly extension for Chrome beta.
If
you are running Google Chrome Beta on Windows or Mac, the Chrome Office Viewer
is ready to be installed. With this application, you can open links to Office
files directly through the browser, a feature that was first announced with the
Chromebook Pixel.
Though
the new innovation may seem ease your effort, you are actually limited right
now to solely viewing the files. If you want to edit the file, you have to
firstly upload the file to Google Drive or open the file though Microsoft
Office or another compatible program. It is also worth nothing if the extension
is quite large, and at around 25 MB it’s close to the same size as the browser
installer itself.
Jelte
Liebrand, Google engineer wrote in the blog post informing the new Chrome
extension that can escalate the computer security by shutting the document in
Chrome’s sandbox. If it is wicked, it won’t be able to spread the malware to
your computer since it has been isolated. The Chrome Officer Viewer itself is
compatible with Excel spreadsheets, Word documents, and PowerPoint
presentation.
Google’s
investigation to add comprehensive support for Office files to Chrome and
Chrome OS has proven as an abstruse result. The company purchased Quick Office
last year to give more firm Office file support, but it has been reported that
it’s painful to use them in Chrome nearly a year later. So far, Chrome OS runs
a bit better, but it is still not perfect. Chrome OS obtained the ability to
view Office files in May 2012.
One
thing that has to be underlined is that if Google succeed in integrating Office
file support in Chrome and Chrome OS, it would fare a long way towards
promoting the company’s argument that the browser-based OS that becomes the
power of Chromebooks and Chromeboxes are worthy competitors to computers running
Windows, Linux, and Mac.
